Valentine’s Day is today and whether you’re loved up or spending it alone why don’t you have a date with one of these films tonight?

5. Love Actually (2003)

Fans of ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’ (2001) and ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ (1994) would be pleased to discover Richard Curtis wrote the screenplay for this too. Also starring Hugh Grant along with Keira Knightley, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Martin Freeman… even Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson), Snape (Alan Rickman) and Joanna Page (Stacey Shipman from Gavin and Stacey) are in this film. If not for Valentine’s Day, this is certainly a good one for all ages. The film follows nine different stories with all one common factor: love. If ‘Love Actually’ goes down a treat, be sure to check out ‘Love Actually 2’ (Red Nose Day Trailer) here.

4. Titanic (1997)

What is known as “one of the world’s greatest films” and a “cinematic masterpiece”, ‘Titanic’ had to be on our list. A young Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet star as the films protagonists Jack and Rose. The film begins as a tale of forbidden love between the two characters when they meet on the Titanic ship but it soon turns into a race for survival as the luxury ship crashes into an iceberg. If the storyline isn’t moving enough, the soundtrack will defiantly pull on your heart strings with Céline Deon’s classic ‘My Heart Will Go On’.

3. One Day (2011)

Based on the novel by David Nicholls ‘One Day’ follows the story of two characters across 20 years. Emma is played by Anne Hathaway and Dexter is played by Jim Sturgess. Although it will never be as good as the novel, this film will make you laugh, cry and smile as much as the novel did.

2. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

The modern re-telling of Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ casts a young Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. The teen drama will have you reminiscing about what life and ‘romance’ was like for you back in school. Whether you’re spending tonight cuddled up with your partner or wrapped in a duvet alone with pizza, ice-cream and your pet cat – at least times are a better now than it was back then, right?

1. 50 First Dates (2004)

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore star together in “one of the funniest romantic comedies in years”. Henry, played by Adam Sandler, meets the beautiful Lucy, Drew Barrymore, and they fall in love. However, there is a twist because Lucy had an accident which prevents her from having a short term memory so the next morning she doesn’t remember ever meeting him. Henry therefore makes her fall in love with him every day and the film follows just this. Rotten Tomatoes rated it only 44% but take my word for it, for a rom-com this is one of the sweetest and funniest films around. Plus, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore always act so well together so cinematically it’s a hit too.
